“I would like to come to a point where we cure even more children that are diagnosed with leukaemia” 

The focus of paediatric oncologist Kees-Jan Pronk’s research is to find out what happens with the blood system in children that develop leukaemia. The other focus of his research is to reduce side effects of leukaemia treatments. “We are trying to find ways to reduce the side effects, but still keeping the treatment as effective as it is.”

‘I believe that validated PET-imaging biomarkers could transform the future clinical cancer care’

The focus of senior consultant Elin Trägårdh’s research is diagnostic nuclear medicine – in particular a modality called PET/CT. It is used mainly for evaluation of patients with cancer. Today, PET/CT is reviewed manually by doctors. ”I think we don't use all the information there is in the images. What if we could use artificial intelligence to help us to quantify the images and obtain as much information as possible?”

The focus of oncologist Anders Wittrup’s research is so called RNA therapeutics and how it can be developed into cancer therapies. “We have a special focus on brain cancers for which there today are very poor treatment options.”

The focus of cardiologist Martin Magnusson’s research is epidemiological clinical heart failure as well as diabetes and cardiovascular studies. “We use large population-based and patient-based cohorts to investigate biomarkers and their association with disease. It all aims to find new drug targets for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

‘Already now, we are producing patient-specific implants that shorten the surgical time’

The focus of medical engineer Einar Heiberg’s research is on empowering physicians with patient-specific 3D models to help each patient. “The vision that I have is that for complex surgeries, the surgeons have already done the surgery multiple times and know exactly what to expect.”

'I hope that my research will lead to more knowledge about bacteria in cystic fibrosis’

Lisa Påhlman, a specialist in infectious diseases, has a main research focus on airway infections in cystic fibrosis – a genetic disease that affects many organs of the body, perhaps most importantly the lungs.  “If we knew more about the bacteria and fungi that these patients are colonised with, we could hopefully have a more tailored or antibiotic treatment for them.”

‘The children always ask: Why did I get this?’

Rheumatologist Robin Kahn’s focus in research is children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Together with his research team, he is trying to find the answers to two questions: why certain children get this condition – and how can it be cured. “These two questions actually
triggered me, and an entire team, to start doing research.”

Cardiologist Andreas Edsfeldt’s focus in research is to understand the underlying biology in type 2 diabetes associated with certain complications, such as myocardial infarction and stroke. “Cardiovascular complications are much more common among individuals with type 2 diabetes. What if we could identify new therapies to reduce the frequency of these complications?”

‘I hope that I will be able to tell my patients that we have a curative therapy’

Paediatric cardiologist Karin Tran Lundmark treats patients with pulmonary hypertension, a condition that means high blood pressure in the lung. Karin Tran Lundmark’s research is focused on finding ways to treat what is causing the high blood pressure. “Currently, we can reduce symptoms and prolong survival, but there is no cure. What if we could dissolve the blockages and restore the normal blood flow in the lung?”

‘My vision is that no patients should die waiting for an organ transplant’

The focus of cardiothoracic surgeon Sandra Lindstedt and her research team is lung transplantation. “Today, we can only use 20 percent of the donor lungs. What if we could recondition and regain lung function of just a portion of those lungs that we cannot use today? That would have a huge impact for patients on the waiting list for lung transplantation.”
