General surgery

Our department of surgery at Skåne University Hospital is a referral centre for southern Sweden and a national referral centre
for the treatment of oesophageal cancer, intraperitoneal tumour growth, and the excision of advanced rectal cancer with pelvic floor reconstruction.

The department:

  • Performs more than 4,000 major operations annually.
  • Has expertise in a wide range of trauma and oncologic surgeries – including upper gastrointestinal, hepato-pancreato-biliary, colorectal, and breast – as well as surgeries to address melanoma, abdominal endocrine tumors, and sarcoma.

The academic unit has an undergraduate program for 120 students per year, and an international course in surgery in English every autumn. There are 94 doctors, including 39 specialists, 15 associate professors and four professors. Annually, 180-200 papers are published and four to six PhD theses presented and defended.
