Employees at the department are requested lecturers at courses in Sweden and all over the world. Based on the successful model of work, the team has also provided long-term support and training in the establishment of a reference diabetes centre in the United Arab Emirates.
The Type 1 Diabetes Clinic is the second largest Diabetes Clinic in Sweden, caring for over 2,000 patients annually with type 1 diabetes. The Type 2 Diabetes Clinic also cares for over 2,000 diabetes patients annually.
The efficient use of the Day-Care Clinic has reduced the need of admission to the hospital. As an extension of the Day-Care Clinic and aligning with modern day philosophy of diabetes care, patients are offered group-education in form of 3-5 day long multi-disciplinary “Diabetes Schools”.
The Diabetes Foot Clinic is judged as top global standard, and the number of above ankle amputations is comparable to the best international levels. The clinic offers new modalities like autologous cell therapy in our treatment options, which have worldwide recognition for outstanding quality.
The Gestational Diabetes Clinic cares for pregnant women with known diabetes or identified gestational diabetes. The activities at the clinic have been nationally acknowledged as the weight of babies delivered by mothers with type 1 diabetes is similar to that delivered by women without the disease. The result is unique on a global level.
The department works closely with researchers at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC), one of the largest such centres in Europe. LUDC is at the forefront of methodologies for identifying causes of diabetes, with one of the world’s largest and best characterised biobanks in the diabetes field.
International recognition is evident from a great number of high impact publications from the scientists in diabetes at Skåne University Hospital and Lund University. In recent years they have published in Science, Nature Genetics, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Cell Metabolism and Journal of Clinical Investigation.
